Remote Access Scams

Stop. Disconnect. Verify.

Imagine you're using your computer or mobile device and you notice the mouse clicking on its own. Maybe it started with a phone call, text, email or pop up saying there was a problem with your device or perhaps just asking you to download something that sounds interesting.  It sounds harmless so you accept the download.

Remote access software is commonly used by legitimate IT professionals but scammers can use the same technology to gain control of your device.

Scammers may impersonate a bank employee, law enforcement, government agency or technical support. Once connected they may be able to see your screen, control your device, obtain sensitive information or perhaps even convince you to move money.

One of the biggest warning signs is urgency and scare tactics. The scammer may threaten you with that if you don't act now that  The scammer may tell you that you need to act quickly because your account is compromised and someone is trying to steal your money. They may even instruct you to not tell anyone including your bank because the employees are in on the scam.

Another red flag is using scare tactics. The scammer may claim you have a warrant out, missed a court date or are under investigation. Legitimate law enforcement or government agencies will not pressure you to send money or allow remote access to your devices.

If you find yourself in a remote access scam immediately disconnect from the internet and unplug any network cables or turn on airplane mode. If you are on the phone with the person end the call immediately. Use a different trusted device to change your passwords and make sure multi-factor authentication is setup. If you believe financial information may have been accessed contact your financial institution immediately.
